What is in a credit report, and who can see it

A credit report is a record of how you have used credit. It is not the same thing as a credit score, and you are entitled to see it.

The sections

A report typically lists personal identifiers, credit accounts with balances and payment history, inquiries from lenders, and certain public records.

Who compiles it

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the three nationwide credit bureaus. Their reports can differ a little, as not every lender reports to all three.

Who may look

Lenders, landlords, insurers and some employers can request reports with a permissible purpose. Checking your own report does not lower your score.

The official site for free reports is AnnualCreditReport.com. We never see anyone’s reports and cannot give credit advice.
